Book focuses on disaster risk reduction

Pondicherry University Vice Chancellor Gurmeet Singh recently felicitated Pradeep Kumar Parida from the Department of Sociology, Pondicherry University on the release of his book titled ‘Natural Disaster and Women: A Gendered Perspective,’ published by Rawat publications, New Delhi.

Dr.Parida said that the book focuses on how and why disasters are a gender issue considering that gender difference is understood as an important variable in disaster research.

“Knowing that disasters are socially constructed events that are part of the social process, this volume has tried to establish the directions on how to integrate gender concerns in disaster risk reduction. Since more women are affected in disasters throughout the world, a comprehensive and detailed historical analysis would help in protecting one of the most vulnerable groups during disasters,” he added.

The Vice Chancellor highlighted how disaster is affecting the vulnerable groups residing on the margins closer to the edge. This volume is an outcome of the national conference ‘Natural Disaster and Women: A Gendered Perspective’ organised at the Department of Sociology, Pondicherry University, in 2016.
