A protest march here, demanding the death penalty for those convicted of raping minors, today turned violent with some protesters pelting stones and vandalising vehicles, police said.
"Some people among the 1000-odd protesters indulged in violence and pelted stones and broke the windscreens of around 10 vehicles in Kotwali area," Superintendent of Police, Burhanpur, Pankaj Shrivastava told PTI.
He said that the violence occurred after the protesters had submitted a memorandum of their demands to the sub-divisional magistrate.
"The situation is under control now. Additional forces have been brought in from adjoining districts and a vigil is being maintained," he said.
The official said that an FIR had been registered, based on the complaint of one of the vehicle owners, and further investigations were underway.
