A departmental inquiry has been set up on Wednesday  in regards to the escape of an inmate of Nari Niketan on Sunday. She had been traced from Vikasnagar on Tuesday evening and brought to the police station. She is reported to be a speech and hearing impaired woman of around 28. This is why she could not have  recorded her statement in the police station, police said. She had reportedly ran away from the Nari Niketan after jumping a 12- feet high wall with the help of a rope and bucket on Sunday noon.

District probation officer, child protection unit, Meena Bisht said that though there are around eight CCTV cameras installed  in the Nari Niketan premises  the footage of her escape  was not captured. “She jumped the wall located near the toilet which was not covered under the  CCTV cameras.

However, some home guards are deployed  at all the three gates of the Home,” she said. She further said that the Home meant for the distressed girls and women were crammed with inmates far beyond its capacity. “While  75 inmates can ideally be  accommodated  there the number of inmates staying there now is  135. There are 14 caretakers aside from  seven sweepers and two washer men,” she added.

After the news of the escape, the state woman commission chairperson Sarojani Kaintura and secretary Ramindri Mandrawal had inspected the Home. Teams had also been formed by police to have the woman traced.
