After being stabbed more than 100 times, Baylee Wylie struggled up from the basement of a Moncton townhouse to the couch in Melissa Shephard's living room, a jury heard Thursday.
"I love you Missy," Wylie said, according to Devin Morningstar in a police interview after Wylie's death. "I can't believe you did this."
Wylie, 18, was found dead in a burned-out townhouse at 96 Sumac Street on Dec. 17, 2015.
A videotape of the police interview with Morningstar was played Thursday after testimony resumed at Shephard's murder trial in the Court of Queen's Bench.
Shephard, 22, is charged with first-degree murder and arson with disregard for human life.
Morningstar was interviewed by Sgt. James MacPherson at the Codiac RCMP detachment on Dec. 20, 2015, the same day he was arrested for murder.
Earlier in the trial, the 20-year-old Morningstar was called three times to testify. Each time, he refused to take an oath, make a solemn affirmation, or even answer questions.
Justice Zoel Dionne warned that refusal could lead to jail time, but it seemed to have no effect on Morningstar, who just stood before the judge in handcuffs and shackles and refused again.
On Thursday, MacPherson was called to testify about the videotaped interview that was played for jurors, who had not been in court since early April because of a lengthy voir dire.
During the police interview, Morningstar appeared emotional, at times crying and expressing fear of retribution for talking.
"I'm in a lot of trouble, so I have to keep my mouth shut," he said at one point.
Throughout the interview, Morningstar mentioned talking to a lawyer, but he continued to talk to MacPherson.
"You're all by yourself here," MacPherson said.

MacPherson told Morningstar there was "a fire and a body," and police were looking for three people — "you and two more."
He identified the others as "Tyler and Marissa."
McPherson asked Morningstar if "she" stabbed Wylie.
"Yeah," Morningstar said before adding: "I don't know. I'm not just saying that to protect her. I don't know"
Asked about the fire at the Sumac Street house, Morningstar said he had nothing to do with it.
"Tyler is a … monster and doesn't have a heart."
When MacPherson asked about Shephard, Morningstar said he thought she'd been kidnapped. When the two were alone together, Shephard would tell Morningstar, "I don't want to be around him. I'm scared."
