White Blindness Epidemic

UpArtMaan Cultural Center will hold a meeting on the comparative analysis of the popular novel ‘Blindness’ written by Portuguese author José Saramago and its adapted film of namesake title on Thursday.
A production of 2008 directed by Fernando Meirelles, the movie will be screened at the event.
According to Tiwall, Asadollah Amraee who has translated the novel into Persian will be present at the meeting to lead the talks.
The title, published in 1995, brought Saramago the Noble Prize in literature in 1998. It is about a society suffering an unexplainable epidemic of blindness, described as white blindness.
It follows the misfortunes of a handful of characters who are among the first to be stricken. After lengthy and traumatic quarantine in an asylum, the group bands together in a family-like unit to survive by their wits and by the unexplained good fortune of a woman among them not affected by the epidemic.
The sudden onset and unexplained origin and nature of the blindness cause widespread panic and the social order rapidly unravels as the government struggles to contain the contagion and keep order via increasingly repressive and inept measures.
The cast includes Julianne Moore, Alice Braga, Mark Ruffalo, Gael Garcia Bernal, Danny Glover and Don Mckeller.
