VADODARA: A 13 foot long crocodile was rescued from the banks of Narmada River at Nareshwar, 70 km from the city, early on Wednesday.
Forest department officials of Vadodara and Karjan rushed to Nareshwar – a popular pilgrim site – after reports that the crocodile had killed one person and injured another since Monday. They placed two cages on the river banks to trap the reptile.

β€œIt was around 2.30 am on Wednesday that the crocodile got trapped and later it was caged. However, as the crocodile weight nearly 400 kg, there was no way that it could be lifted and put in pick-up van. Hence, we had to call in an earth mover with the help of which the crocodile was lifted and put in the pick-up van,” said Rakesh Wadhwana a wildlife activist.

The crocodile was later handed over to Karjan forest department officials.

On Monday, Kiran Rohit, a 19-year-old resident of Kareli village of Jambusar taluka, was taking a bath in the river with his friends when the crocodile dragged him. Rohit was saved but he had received severe injuries and rushed to a nearby hospital. However, he succumbed during treatment.

On Tuesday, Ghanshyam Rajput, a 21-year-old resident of Mohammadpura area of Bharuch was also dragged into the river by the same crocodile which grabbed his left leg when he was playing with his friends on the river bank. Rajput was first shifted to Karjan public health centre from where he was brought to state-run SSG Hospital in the city for further treatment.

After the spate of attacks, Karjan MLA Akshay Patel had made a representation before the forest department officials to rescue the reptile.
