Mattel appoints Ynon Kreiz CEO, replacing Margo Georgiadis

Mattel Inc. announced Thursday afternoon that Chief Executive Margo Georgiadis is leaving the company, and will be replaced by Ynon Kreiz on April 26. Ancestry later announced that Georgiadis will become CEO of that company once her duties at Mattel are complete. Confirming an earlier Wall Street Journal report, Mattel said that Georgiadis will stay on through May 10 in an advisory role and that Kreiz will still take on the role of board chairman, which was planned before Thursday's announcement. Kreiz was the chairman and CEO of Maker Studios Inc. before that company was acquired by The Walt Disney Co. . "Ynon has tremendous expertise across areas critical to our strategy, including digital, media and entertainment, and we have already benefited from that experience and his compelling vision for the company since he became a director," said Christopher Sinclair, Mattel's former CEO and chairman who is retiring from the board. Georgiadis, a former Alphabet Inc. executive, had been CEO of Mattel since February 2017. "I am proud of what we accomplished together and confident in Mattel's path forward," she said in Thursday's announcement. Mattel stock closed down 3.2% Thursday, with a sharp decline toward the end of the session after the Journal report, but rebounded with a 3.9% gain in after-hours trading. Shares have declined 46.4% in the past year, as the S&P 500 index has gained 15.8%.

American Girl shutting Wisconsin facility, impacting 135 jobs

American Girl, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Mattel Inc. , said Thursday that it is closing its Wilmot, Wis. call center and distribution facility, impacting 135 jobs. Affected workers can apply for other jobs within the company. The distribution center will close June 29, 2018 and the call center is slated for closure during the first quarter of 2019. Warehouse work will be absorbed into the brand's facilities in DeForest and Middleton. American Girl will hire workers at these facilities to handle the additional duties. Mattel is scheduled to announce first-quarter earnings after the closing bell on April 26. Mattel shares are down nearly 1% in Thursday trading, and down 10.5% for the year so far. The S&P 500 index is up 0.5% for 2018 to date.

Mattel's stock jumps after Jefferies raises rating, stock price target

Shares of Mattel Inc. shot up 5.6% in midday trade Wednesday, after the toymaker was upgraded at Jefferies analyst Stephanie Wissink, who said the near-term risks are now largely priced into the stock. Wissink raised her rating to hold, after being at a bearish underperform since Feb. 26. She bumped up her price target to $13, which is 8.9% below current levels, from $12. While Wissink said her confidence in the recovery is "still very low," she expects the stock to "trade in a range" near term, as "persistently weak fundamental results and demand dislocation" stemming from the Toys "R" Us liquidation caps inherent intellectual property value and take-out speculation. She expects first-quarter results, which are scheduled for release on April 19, to be a "mixed bag," balanced by sales and underlying profit misses and aggressive cost cutting. "It's unclear what the market will value in the wake of the report; as such, a neutral position seems more appropriate," Wissink wrote in a note to clients. The stock has shed 7.9% over the past three months, while rival Hasbro Inc. shares have lost 5.2% and the S&P 500 has slipped 4.0%.

Mattel CEO makes 4,987 times the typical employee

Mattel Inc. Chief Executive Margo Georgiadis has a total compensation that is 4,987 times the median worker's pay of $6,271, according to documents filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission late Thursday. Georgiadis's total compensation was $31.3 million for 2017. Since Georgiadis joined the company in 2017, she received about $25 million in stock compensation, some of which is tied to performance. When removed from the CEO's annual compensation figure, Georgiadis would receive $9.6 million, or 1,527 times the median worker's pay. In the filing, Mattel said about 78% of its workers, or 27,500 people, are employed outside of the U.S., the majority of whom work in manufacturing plants. "Market levels of pay and wage rates are dramatically lower for foreign countries in which Mattel has manufacturing facilities," the filing said, adding that the overall median worker pay was less than 25% of the median wage of its U.S.-based workers. Mattel said it has about 35,280 employees by the end of 2017, including temporary and seasonal workers. Firms are reporting their CEO pay in comparison to the median worker for the first time because of a 2015 rule mandated by the Dodd-Frank act. Mattel stock is down 14% this year, as the S&P 500 index has fallen 1%.

Mattel, Hasbro stocks sink after report of Toys 'R' Us store liquidation plans

Shares of toymakers Mattel Inc. and Hasbro Inc. sank in premarket trade Friday, after The Wall Street Journal reported that bankrupt toy retailer Toys "R" Us is preparing to liquidate its U.S. stores rather than restructure its debt. Mattel's stock tumbled 6.4%, as Toys "R" Us accounted for 8% of the company's sales in 2017, down from 11% in 2016. Hasbro's stock dropped 3.1%, with Toys "R" Us accounting of 9% of 2017 sales, in line with 2016 sales. SunTrust RH analyst Michael Swartz said that while a Toys "R" Us liquidation would not be a complete surprise, it is "certainly not a positive" for companies that count the store chain as a customer. However, he believes most major toy manufacturers "had already begun to scale back exposure to the retailer." Swartz is maintaining his earnings estimates for Mattel and Hasbro for now, but expects a "downward bias" in the near term. Mattel's stock has tumbled 36.6% over the past 12 months and Hasbro shares have lost 4.1%, while the S&P 500 has gained 15.8%.

Hasbro sales tumble as Star Wars craze cools

Hasbro Inc. posted an unexpected drop in fourth-quarter revenue as sales of Star Wars-related toys fell, slowing down after three straight years of new releases for the franchise. The maker of Monopoly, Nerf guns and Disney Princess dolls posted a 2% sales decline during the key holiday quarter, well short of the company's forecast for sales growth of between 4% and 7%.

Hasbro's sales top Mattel's

Hasbro Inc.'s sales topped those of rival toy maker Mattel Inc. for the first time since 1993 after it had an easier time weathering a disappointing holiday season. The maker of Play-Doh said Wednesday its revenue rose 4% in 2017 to $5.21 billion, surpassing Mattel's revenue of $4.88 billion. Both companies reported weakened demand for toys in the final months of the year, but Hasbro's fourth-quarter sales slid only 2% while Mattel's dropped 12%.
