Dorothy Young

DOROTHY `DOT' YOUNG
Cedar Rapids

Dorothy "Dot" Young, 93, of Cedar Rapids, entered her eternal home on April 18, 2018, following a sudden stroke. Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, April 21, 2018, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Pius X Catholic Church. A visitation will be at the church one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in Cedar Memorial Park following the service at the church.
Dot was born in Jersey City, N.J., and married her first love, Donald, the boy next door, when they were just 19. The Young family resided in New Jersey until Donald Young accepted a position at Quaker Oats in Cedar Rapids in 1964. Dorothy was a full-time homemaker for most of her marriage, dedicating herself to caring for her husband and three children. Dot had boundless energy, seldom sitting still except when saying her rosary or enjoying a cup of coffee and sweet treat. She enjoyed taking family vacations to upper Minnesota and Canada, and once traveled to Florida, including a stop at Disney World. One of her favorite pastimes was playing the slot machines, both in Iowa and on occasional trips to visit family in New Jersey, when she would get together with her sisters for a trip to Atlantic City. She was a very compassionate, generous and caring person.
Her husband, Donald, preceded her in eternal life after 59 years of marriage.
She will be missed by her loving family, which includes her sons, Donald Jr. (Sandra) and James (Sandra); her daughter, Marianne Wanerus; her grandchildren, Colleen Hoverman (Craig), New Jersey, Kevin Young (Allison) of West Hartford, Conn., and Kimberly Young (Maurizio) of Havertown, Pa.; nine special great–grandchildren, Sam, Ben, Jaden, Tyler, Colten, Leo, Finn, Alexa and Luca; her beautiful sisters, Mabel Farrell, Ann Caswell and Ruth McNally; and her wonderful nieces and nephews, all of New Jersey.
In lieu of flowers, the family has respectfully requested that any memorial contribution be made to Deborah Hospital in Dorothy's name.
