Emergency services were called to a two-car crash south of the Kopu Bridge around 8.30pm on Thursday.
Three people are dead following a two-car crash on Kopu Bridge in Coromandel.
One person is in critical condition.
The two-car crash happened south of the bridge on State Highway 25 on Thursday evening.
Each car was carrying two people, police said in a statement.
A man working at Mobil station near the scene said it sounded like the cars had crashed going around a corner, and police cars and fire engines had gone "screaming" down the road shortly after.
Emergency services were called to the scene at 8.30pm and were working to free people trapped in the car.
The crash has blocked the road in both directions.
Road diversions have been put in place at the Kopu roundabout at the intersection of SH 25 and SH 26 and at State Highway 25 and Hauraki Road. They are likely to stay in place until midnight. Motorists should avoid the area if possible.
The Serious Crash Unit is investigating.
