A new version of the VW Amarok is on the way.

Volkswagen's V6 Amarok is set to receive an upgrade this year, gaining a reworked version of the brand's diesel powertrain.

The twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre V6 will kick out potent 190kW and 580Nm outputs when it arrives in the third quarter of the year, outgunning key rivals including the 147kW, 500Nm Holden Colorado and 147kW, 470Nm Ford Ranger.

The decision to beef up the Amarok's existing peaks of 180kW and 550Nm (produced in periods of "overboost") follows confirmation from Mercedes that the range-topping Mercedes-Benz X-Class X350d ute will feature a similar twin-turbo diesel V6 with 190kW and 550Nm.

Volkswagen has confirmed the arrival of the new Amarok V6, and claimed the engine will produce 200kW on overboost.

"As we've promised before, we have no intention of giving up the mantle of the most powerful ute in its class and are looking to offer the upgraded 200kW Amarok V6 later in the year."

The upgraded version is likely to arrive in New Zealand in September.
