Local police last night busted a spurious seed manufacturing unit with the arrest of three persons and seized different varieties collectively valued at Rs 68.42 lakh, an official said today.
"The police, in coordination with state Agriculture department and Seeds Certification Control department, raided a house of one Kalpesh Tapar, located on Kacheri road," said district superintendent of police, Ramnath Pokale.
He said police had received many complaints in the past that the sale of spurious seeds is on the rise.
"During the raid, police seized spurious seeds of BT cotton, brinjal and of other vegetables and fruits," he said, adding that police also recovered empty packing bags bearing names of reputed brands.
Pokale said the accused used to treat the seeds with chemicals to make them look genuine and pack them under reputed brands, with a view to sell them to farmers.
Police inspector Rajendra Singh Gour said that besides Tapar, two other persons were also involved in the illegality.
A case has been registered with the Kadim Jalna police station under relevant sections of the IPC against the trio.
The seized seeds have been sent to laboratory for testing.
The accused trio were today produced before a local court that remanded them in police custody till April 27.
