Amaratunga informed the journalists that the Tourism Ministry was quite worried about the visitor safety after an increase in complaints in terms of harassment and exploitation of tourists particularly in the western and southern coastal belts.

In recent years, he explained that tourist arrivals had hit the record figure and tourism had come up as one of the leading sectors, churning out the majority amount of foreign exchange into the island.

“We guarantee absolute safety for tourists, with the support of the police,” the Minister said.

“We will ensure that no tourist faces any king of harassment and they return back to their countries with a memorable experience,” the Minister added.

Further, the minister stated that anyone identifying harassing or abusing tourists would be sternly penalized and strongest legal action would be taken with no impediment.

The tourism industry of Sri Lanka which one time was seriously scarred by a 30-year civil conflict, has turned out to be one of the principal industries after it was dubbed as the world’s one of the supreme tourist hot spots by several international publications.
