CEDAR RAPIDS — Cedar Rapids police have made an arrest in a January homicide.
According to a media release from the Cedar Rapids Police Department, a suspect has been arrested in the shooting death of 18-year-old AnnaElise M. Edgeton,
Police say they have charged Kyler Jacob Junkins, 19, of Marion with first-degree murder and first-degree burglary for allegedly breaking into Edgeton’s apartment and shooting her. Police arrested Junkins and charged him after he was already in custody in the Linn County Jail on unrelated charges, according to the release.
Edgeton’s body was found on Jan. 13 at the Shamrock Apartments, 316 Jacolyn Drive. Edgeton, 18, had been shot to death, police said at the time, a finding that was later confirmed by the State Medical Examiner, according to the release. She was a resident of the Shamrock Apartments.
Edgeton was a 2015 graduate of Metro High School and a certified nursing assistant, according to her obituary. She married John Edgeton in August 2017.
“Anna was determined, outspoken, kind-hearted, mature and responsible beyond her years,” her obituary states. “She was bright, driven, spunky and independent.”
According to the release, the investigation remains ongoing, so no more details will be released at this time.
Cedar Rapids public safety spokesman Greg Buelow said no more will be disclosed at this time due to the ongoing investigation and “the seriousness” of the crime. However, he confirmed that investigators do not believe that this was a random act.
