CPM congress calls for Opp unity

The crucial national CPI(M) Party congress began in Hyderabad with a call for forging unity between the Left and the democratic forces to meet the up coming challenges.

The five-day meeting was being held at a time when the party was facing an existential challenge and internal squabbling over the key question of whether the party should join hands with the Congress party for the forthcoming elections are not.

Inaugurating the national conference party general secretary Sitaram Yehcuri said there was a need for the party to strengthen itself while further cementing the unity among the Leftist forces.

Lashing out at the Modi Government for its failure on all the fronts, Yechuri said the attacks by the communal forces on Muslims and Dalits were increasing and corruption was rising. He said the BJP had failed in delivering on the promises of creating jobs for the youth and providing minimum support price to the farmers. “Agriculture sector was passing through the worst crisis”, he said. Describing the communal forces as the serious threat to the national unity and integrity, Yechuri said that only left and democratic forces can defeat the BJP Government at the centre.

Calling for mobilising all the secular and democratic forces in the country he said that only left can given a policy alternative to meet the challenges ahead.

The meeting was being held under the shadows of serious difference between Sitaram Yechuri who was pushing for an understanding with the Congress party and Prakash Karat who was opposed to such an idea. The conference will also elect the general secretary of the party.

Party Congress, being attended by the delegates from all over the country, was formally inaugurated with freedom fighter Mallu Swarajyam hoisting the party flag.

CPI general secretary Suravaram Sudhakar Reddy addressing the inaugural session called for the left unity and said that attacks on the left workers in Kerala and West Bengal had increased.

CPIM Politburo member BV Raghavulu said that the party conference will discuss 25 resolutions and will end with a massive public meeting on Sunday.
