Former Queensland electoral commissioner hit with drug charges

Queensland's former electoral commissioner has been charged with drug possession two months after he resigned over "serious allegations".

Walter van der Merwe will appear in a Brisbane court next month accused of possessing steroids.

The 56-year-old resigned from his senior public service role on February 14 after he was suspended.

Attorney-General Yvette D'Ath issued van der Merwe with a show cause notice when the "serious allegations" were levelled against him.

The nature of those allegations wasn't known until he was charged on Wednesday.

Van der Merwe will front the Holland Park Magistrates Court on May 1, charged with a single count of possessing a dangerous drug.
