
CBI gets 4-day remand of Atul Sengar, reaches Unnao for on spot probe

LUCKNOW: Unnao rape accused BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar’s brother Atul Singh, named in the assault on the rape survivor’s father, along with four other co-accused, was produced by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in a special CBI court.
Magistrate Sapna Tripathi on Tuesday allowed four-day police custody remand (PCR) of all five to the probe agency in connection with the death of the girl’s father in custody.
The remand period of the five accused Atul Singh, Virendra Singh, Shail Singh, Sonu Singh and Vineet Mishra, would commence from 10 am on April 18.
Earlier, a 16-member CBI team, including IG GK Goswami and SP Raghvendra Vats, went to Makhi Police Station in Unnao. While 12 officers had gone from Lucknow, a six-member team from Central Forensic Sciences Laboratory (CFSL) had come down from Delhi to assist the CBI team in collecting evidence.
On reaching Unnao, the probe team took the victim and her mother under tight security cover to Makhi village and Sengar’s house to verify allegation and inspect the spot for collection of evidence.
After combing the house of the accused on the information shared by the victim for two hours, the team also interacted with the villagers about the scuffle between the two families on April 3 during which the victim’s father was allegedly beaten up brutally by Atul Sengar.
After getting the remand of the BJP MLA’s brother, the CBI now plans to interrogate him in the presence of Sengar, the victim and her family.
Focusing on the alleged murder of the victim’s father, the CBI summoned the then Beat In-charge of Makhi Police Station for questioning and took out call detail records of six suspended and arrested policemen to check if any of them were in contact with the BJP MLA, his brother and his close aides during and after the crime.
In all, CBI re-registered four FIRs lodged in connection with Unnao episode reopening the first FIR registered by victim’s mother on June 20, 2017 naming Shashi Singh, her son Shubham and three others for gang raping her daughter.
DySP RR Tripathi has been entrusted with the job of probing the charges levelled in all the four FIRs.
