Agitated with the rape and killing of an eight-year-old girl in Etah, local residents and family members staged a massive protest on Tuesday and blocked the Etah -Farrukhabad road.

They snatched the victim’s body from the police and placed it on the road in front of Vikas Bhawan. Their anger could be gauged from the fact that the people were not demanding compensation or relief from the administration but were demanding that the accused be handed over to them.

“Khoon ka Badla Khoon” (Blood for blood) was the slogan of the mob and the same was demanded by the victim’s father too.

They also said that the blockade would be lifted only after Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath came there to listen their grievances.

The situation turned violent when the police tried to disperse the mob and the protestors pelted stones on security personnel.

District Magistrate Amit Kishore and other officials were on the spot and persuaded the agitators to lift the blockade.

The DM said that the family of the girl would be given Rs 10 lakh as compensation. Later on assurance that the accused would be booked under National Security Act (NSA), the protest ended.

The eight-year-old girl was strangled to death after rape in Kotwali police station area on Monday night. The victim was kidnapped from a marriage ceremony near Mandi Samiti in Shitalpur area and her body was recovered from a construction site. Circumstantial evidences pointed that the victim was raped and was later killed fearing identification. A rope was found tied around the neck of the girl. The girl was rushed to the district hospital where she was declared brought dead.

Later SSP, Akhilesh Kumar Chaurasia said that the accused was identified as Sonu Jatav (19), who was given the task of putting up tents at the marriage ceremony. “He lured the girl, raped her and subsequently killed her. The miscreant was in an inebriated state. Heavy security has been deployed in the area in view of the anger among the people. A case was registered and the victim’s body was sent for autopsy,” Chaurasia said.

Meanwhile in Etawah, a 19-year-old girl and her younger sister, who had gone out on Monday evening to relieve themselves in a field, were shot dead.

SSP in Etawah, Ashok Kumar Tripathi said that the incident occurred in a village under Basrehar police station. “When the sisters did not return home till late evening, the family members thought that they had gone to a neighbour’s house to attend a function. When they did not return even by late night, the family frantically searched for them and found their bodies in a nearby field. Both had bullet injuries,” the SSP disclosed. At the crime spot, the police found bullet shells and a liquor bottle. The police did not rule out the possibility of both the girls being raped before murder.
