CHENNAI: Hi Nataraj,

Dogs are social animals and hence do not understand the concept of separation. They have to be explicitly taught to and eased into a routine of staying alone at home. This is true for all pups, irrespective of whether you live in an apartment or an individual home.During the first few months of his puppyhood, you will have to be around him full time as he would need dedicated care and attention. This is a great time to focus on teaching him to be by himself even in your presence. Include quiet times as part of your routine. Begin with short few minutes and slowly increase his “me” time.

You can do this even as a part of his playtime where you can offer him a chew toy or food and let him play alone. When he is old enough and ready, graduate to taking short breaks for 5 to 10 minutes outside the home and observe his reactions. Over a period of time, increase the time interval thereby gradually training him to be alone. While doing so, do not to fuss too much or dramatise your exit. Similarly, do not swoop in with anxiety or excitement when you return. Be relaxed and greet him calmly. Your dog will then understands staying alone for a few hours, is not a big deal and just part of his routine.

When leaving your dog alone, make sure he has access to clean water, is in a safe area of the house (puppy-proofed) and has access to relieve himself when needed. It is not a good idea to leave them alone for more than a few hours in a day. Compensate for your absence by spending quality time with him. If you are really constrained for time, do consider adopting an older dog who is accustomed to staying alone and can tune into your routine with ease. Consult a professional trainer who can help you with the training routine.
