Former test opener Justin Langer has enjoyed great success with the Perth Scorchers in the Big Bash.

Perth's newspaper is adamant former test opener Justin Langer will be Australia's new coach, though Cricket Australia says it hasn't yet made a decision.

The national body hurriedly released a statement saying the process for appointing a new coach would be discussed by its board on Friday, after The Western Australian reported Langer would take the reins.

A new coach is required after Darren Lehmann resigned from the position in the wake of the ball tampering scandal in South Africa, which saw captain Steve Smith and vice-captain David Warner suspended from national duties for a year.

The West Australian said Langer, who played 105 tests, was the fan favourite to be coach - and said that would happen..

"Langer believes the national coach should oversee all three international formats – test, one-day and Twenty20 – but former team-mates Ricky Ponting or Jason Gillespie are in the frame to take on the limited overs roles if the positions are split," the Perth-based paper said.

Langer has had great success as coach of the Perth Scorchers in Australia's Big Bash.

Cricket Australia released a statement soon after Langer's photo appeared in news reports.

"The process to be undertaken for the appointment of a new Australian men's head coach will be discussed and agreed at the CA board meeting this Friday," the statement read.

A CA spokesman told The West Australian no one had been offered the position yet.

"It might be a couple of weeks before that happens."
