CHARLOTTESVILLE — Fourth-ranked James Madison got out to a four-goal lead on the way to a 15-10 win over No. 12 Virginia in a nonconference women’s lacrosse game on Wednesday.

The Dukes improved to 14-1

Virginia (9-7) was led by Kasey Behr with three goals and Sammy Mueller with two.

Rachel Vander Kolk posted 10 saves for the Cavaliers.

Liberty 19, Radford 9

RADFORD — The Flames (12-4, 5-1 Big South) outscored the Highlanders (5-10, 2-4) by five goals in each half.

Callie Bonnel and Adrian Rius scored three goals each, Brittany Rinaldi added two goals and Hannah Rosen posted 14 saves for Radford.

Christopher Newport 20, Southern Virginia 2

NEWPORT NEWS — The Captains (8-8, 4-3 CAC) scored 10 goals in both the first and second halves to route the Knights (5-10, 0-7) in a conference matchup.

Natalie Rice and Caiti Knowles scored one goal each, and Madilyn Krauss posted 14 saves for Southern Virginia.

No. 10 Wash. and Lee 18, Bridgewater 5

BRIDGEWATER — The No. 10 Generals (10-4, 6-0 ODAC) rode a 13-2 halftime lead in picking up a win over the Eagles (9-4, 3-3) to remain unbeaten in conference play.

Jess Castelo and Cordelia Peters scored four goals each, with Peters dishing out three assists and Castelo two, and Dani Murray added three goals for W&L.

The Blue & White outshot Bridgewater 37-16.

Men’s lacrosse

No. 18 Roanoke 25, Bridgewater 4

The No. 18 Maroons (11-4, 6-2 ODAC) used a 20-0 run to top the Eagles (8-6, 2-5).

Brendan Devane, Wyatt Naylor, Jason Sarro and Matthew Lintner scored three goals each.

Sarro also dished out six assists.

BASEBALL

Virginia 14, Liberty 3

CHARLOTTESVILLE — Cameron Comer hit a three-run homer and Tanner Morris a two-run shot to highlight a five-run seventh inning, as the Cavaliers (22-16) routed the Flames (22-13).

Cayman Richardson had two hits with three RBIs and scored a run and Andy Weber went 3 for 5 with two RBIs for Virginia.

VMI 11, Richmond 2, 10 inn.

RICHMOND — The Keydets (19-17) send 14 batters to the plate and scored nine runs in the 10th inning to knock off the host Spiders (19-16).

VMI benefitted from five hits, two walks, two hit batsmen, one error and four wild pitches/passed balls in the inning.

Collin Fleischer had three hits and four RBIs for the Keydets, including a two-run homer.

The home run was the 41st homer of Fleischer’s college career, tying him with Jordan Ballard for the all-time Keydet record.

Virginia Tech 6, Old Dominion 5, 10 inn.

BLACKSBURG — Luke Horanski singled to right, driving in Stevie Mangrum in the bottom of the 10th as the Hokies (16-21) got by the Monarchs (11-24) in a nonconference matchup.

Horanski finished with three hits,two RBIs and a run scored, and Mangrum was 2 for 3 and scored twice.

No. 13 Roanoke 5, Emory & Henry 3

The Maroons (24-7, 13-3 ODAC) scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth, and Sal Trancucci shut down the Wasps (11-16, 4-11) in the ninth.

Cody Shell, Sam Watson and Scott Ellis all went 2 for 3, with Shell scoring twice and driving in a run. Watson had an RBI and a run scored.

Jack Howard had two hits, two RBIs and scored a run for the Maroons.

Bridgewater 12, Washington and Lee 4

BRIDGEWATER — The Eagles (13-14, 5-10 ODAC) roughed up five W&L pitchers for 16 hits, including three home runs, in picking up a conference win.

Austin Crane and Paul Diven both had a pair of hits, drove in a run and scored one for the Generals (11-19, 3-12).

Ferrum 15, Lynchburg 9

FERRUM — Tim Ortega’s two-run homer was part of a seven-run fifth inning for Ferrum.

Nathaniel Anthony went 4 for 5 with a triple, two runs and two RBIs for the Panthers (16-23). Starter Drew Calohan pitched 5 2/3 innings to get the win, allowing 11 hits, five earned runs and three walks with four strikeouts.

No. 9 Christopher Newport 8, Southern Virginia 2

NEWPORT NEWS — Josh Husby scattered six hits over 5 2/3 innings with six strikeouts for the No. 9 Captains (28-6, 12-2 CAC).

The Knights (15-14, 6-7) scored both of their runs on fielding errors that allowed Canon Anderson to score in the fourth and Stetson Kay in the seventh.

Radford 12, Virginia Tech 11

RADFORD — Garrett Matheny slid head-first into home on a wild pitch in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Highlanders (15-21) a walk-off win over the Hokies (15-21) on Tuesday night.

It was Radford’s first win in the series since 2016.

Tech had tied the score in the top of the ninth on a Stevie Mangrum three-run homer.

Matt Roth had four hits and two RBIs for Radford. Carlin Christian had two hits and drove in two runs.

Tom Stoffel belted a two-run shot for Tech. Sam Fragale had four hits, including a solo shot.

The teams combined for eight errors and eight unearned runs.

Virginia 3, George Washington 2, 12 inn.

CHARLOTTESVILLE — Brendan Rivoli doubled home the winning run in the bottom of the 12th inning to give the Cavaliers (21-16) a walk-off win over George Washington (20-16) on Tuesday night.

Nate Eikhoff had two hits and two RBIs, and Tanner Morris had three hits and scored a run for Virginia.

Andrew Abbott picked up the win in relief, throwing three hitless innings with five strikeouts and no walks.

No. 13 Roanoke 15, Greensboro 6

The Maroons (23-7) banged out a season-high 22 hits Tuesday night in a win over the Pride (16-18).

Roanoke blew open a 7-6 game by scoring six runs in the seventh inning.

Sean Guida finished 4 for 4, including a solo homer, and had two RBIs. Will Salva was 5 for 6 with three RBIs.

Washington and Lee 9, Ferrum 5

FERRUM — The Generals (11-18) erupted for seven runs in the second inning and held on to beat the Panthers (15-23) on Tuesday night.

Robey Smalley had two hits and one RBI for W&L. Paul Diven added a pinch-hit solo homer.

Jake Martin had three hits and one RBI for the Panthers.

Softball

Georgetown 15, Virginia 7, 5 inn.

WASHINGTON — The Hoyas (13-30) pounded out 15 hits to take a win over the Cavaliers (12-32).

Georgetown took an early 8-0 lead but Virginia put five runs on the board in the third and two in the fourth to pull within a run. Georgetown then exploded for seven runs in the fifth inning to end the game on the eight-run rule.

Allison Davis and Danni Ingraham each hit two-run homers with Davis finishing 2 for 3 with three RBIs and scored twice for the Hoos who were held to six hits.

Radford sweeps Norfolk State

NORFOLK — The Highlanders (24-15) swept a twin bill from the Spartans (19-26) by the scores of 7-1 and 8-3.

In the opener, Jessie Marvin threw a complete-game four-hitter, striking out three and walking two.

Maggie Rowe went 2 for 3, including a two-run homer, with three RBIs for Radford.

In the nightcap, Talia Douglas went 3 for 4 and scored a run and Brianna Mills hit a three-run homer for the Highlanders.

Hokies’ DT Glaze decides to transfer

Redshirt freshman defensive tackle J’Bril Glaze announced his intentions to transfer Tuesday on Twitter. The 6-foot-1, 289-pounder from Tampa, Florida, committed to the Hokies late in the 2017 recruiting cycle, redshirted last fall and didn’t figure to dent the two-deep this fall.
