According to a press release from the Chinese smartphone maker, Huawei P20 models, the P20 and P20 Pro, sold like hot cakes in the first 10 seconds after they were made available online. Reportedly, the phones made 100 million yuan or $15 million in the flash sale.
Last Thursday, the tech giant rolled out the new models in China. The company boasted that the two models generated more than 100 million yuan in sales within the first 10 seconds the two handsets appeared on the company’s site.
Huawei P20’s success happened despite the U.S. intelligence community’s opposition to buying the phones for government workers over spying fears. Huawei’s Richard Yu, who leads the consumer business unit, unveiled that the company won’t leave the U.S. market.
Huawei Not Ditching the U.S.
Yu also suggested that the China-based firm could beat South Korea-based Samsung in smartphone sales despite the United States’ ban.
In the U.S., Huawei has been unable to reach any deal with Verizon, AT&T, and Best Buy because of government pressures. Best Buy is one of the retailers that will not sell the P20 and P20 models. In response, the Chinese company sacked several senior U.S. employees. The U.S. has also barred Huawei from monetizing its networking tools.
Huawei P20 Pro ($1,140) is different from other handsets in its tier as it sports three rear cameras, one of the best optical zooms for a smartphone (3x), and a flashy color that stands out. Huawei P20 ($855) has only two cameras on its back, but the flashy color is still there.
The company also announced that it plans to focus more on the markets outside the States as the industry is visibly affected by President Donald Trump’s trade war with China. Eric Xu, one of the company’s three CEOs, said that what was going on between Beijing and Washington was beyond himself to explain.
