A Biju Research Chair in honour of former Chief Minister and legendary leader Biju Patnaik would be set up at the Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS) University, announced Vice-Chancellor Prof Harekrushna Satapathy on Patnaik’s 21st death anniversary Tuesday.

Students and staff of the institute paid tribute to Bijubabu on the occasion. The KISS Deemed University is the first one in India to set up a research chair in the name of Bijubabu, said Prof Satapathy. It would stimulate research on life and work of the late leader, he added.

A statue of Bijubabu would also be placed in the KISS premises, where statues of great personalities including Mahatma Gandhi, Subhas Chandra Bose, Swami Vivekananda, Baba Saheb Ambedkar, Gautam Buddha, Utkalmani Gopabandhu Das and Madhusudan Das are installed.

Remembering Biju Patnaik, KIIT and KISS founder Dr Achyuta Samanta spoke on Bijubabu’s ideology and his role in India’s freedom moment. Bijubabu always said that quality education can break the cycles of intergenerational poverty. The KG-to-PG formula of providing education free of cost in the State where the marginalised get an opportunity to become change-makers was envisioned by Biju Patnaik, Dr Samanta said. His dreams are getting realised at the KISS in true sense and spirit, he added.
