Beloved First Lady Barbara Bush is being remembered throughout San Antonio after her passing Tuesday at the age of 92.

One of her many connections to San Antonio is to a school in NEISD named after her, Barbara Bush Middle School.

Staff and students say she was devoted to the school that bears her name and always kept in touch with teachers there over the years.

They say she even offered up a personal recipe for a celebratory cookbook they released when the school first opened.

Teacher Margaret Boehme remembered meeting her.

“The thing that struck me the most is that she was a tiny little lady. I expected her to be more imposing. You see her on TV she looked like she was tall, but she was not even as tall as I was. She was very, very gracious. Very interested in what the students were doing,” Boehme said.

The school is putting together a 20th anniversary cookbook and Barbara was planning on sending a recipe. Teachers describe her as a true servant to the community-- even one as small as this school.

Meanwhile, condolences from national leaders continue to pour in.

President Trump tweeted Tuesday evening, “Melania and I join the Nation in celebrating the life of Barbara Bush,” along with an official White House statement.

Former President Bill Clinton tweeted in part “Barbara Bush was a remarkable woman. She had grit & grace, brains & beauty. She was fierce & feisty in support of her family & friends, her country & her causes.”

Her memorial service will be held Saturday in Houston.
