While speaking with the Kampala journalists, Ephraim Kamuntu the Tourism minister of Uganda said that jointly with the Work Bank funded Competitive Enterprise Development Programme or CEDP they anticipate that the ground breaking ceremony for the construction works to start next month even though financial support has been slashed.
When questioned from where they will get the balance of the money to restore the shortfall, the executive director Uganda Tourism Board, Stephen Asiimwe said that the difference had been caused by the fluctuations in dollar and it would be adjusted to reveal present dollar rates.
The Uganda Hotel and Tourism Training Institute is a government hotel along with being a tourism professionals training institute set up by the Parliament in 1994 to train Ugandans in hotel management and tourism-related courses.
It is housed in the former Crested Crane Hotel in Jinja.
The rehabilitation and building of a modern hotel and tourism training institute in Uganda has become a false piety after a number of investigation into financial losses in tourism have raised awareness towards it as a conduit for theft of donor funds.
“If you go to all the top hotels in the country, you will find that they are managed by foreigners. We do not have Ugandans there so we must build our local expertise. Anytime next month we shall be going for the ground breaking ceremony,” he said.
