Burnt Hills

Dominating the Foothills Council title landscape is fine for the South Glens Falls softball team, but the Bulldogs are looking to once again rule the Section II Class A ranks.

Tuesday afternoon in cold conditions that featured occasional snowflakes, South Glens Falls brought the heat directly to Burnt Hills.

The Bulldogs pounded out 19 hits and smacked five home runs, including a pair from senior catcher Hannah Mosher, in producing an impressive 14-6 nonleague triumph over the Spartans in a showdown of Class A powers.

"This is definitely a good challenge for us to see what we've got," South Glens Falls senior first baseman Celyna Shaw said. "This year, we are really challenging ourselves to get ready for sectionals. We had a hard loss (in the Class A semifinals) against Averill Park, so we want to get back stronger than last year."

South Glens Falls finished 18-2 last year and has not won a sectional title since 2012. The Bulldogs, winners of 15 Section II titles and two state championships, are seeking their first title-game appearance since falling to Troy in the 2013 final.

"They have been the premier Class A program in Section II, and maybe even New York state, for a long time. We're trying to get there," Burnt Hills coach Gary Holtz said. "I think we were a little intimidated to begin. They know how good South Glens Falls has been, and are."

Shaw staked South Glens Falls (4-0) to a 2-0 advantage with a two-run home run to left field against Burnt Hills starter Kristen Langdon.

South Glens Falls sophomore Zoe Lanfear, the Bulldogs' No. 9 hitter, made it 4-0 in the second inning with a two-run home run to center. An infield RBI single from senior pitcher Maddie Capozucca extended the advantage to 5-0.

The Spartans (3-2) did not register a hit through the first three innings, but sprang to life in the fourth against Capozucca after falling behind 7-0.

Langdon and Morgan Skpowski each singled, followed by a titanic three-run home run to center by junior third baseman Madison Maggs.

"I have never seen one hit that far here," Holtz said of Maggs' home run. "She hit the fence five or six times last year, so I told her to get in the weight room. The kid lifted like crazy. She is so strong."

Burnt Hills senior center fielder Miya Hugaboom made it 7-4 with a solo shot in the fourth, but South Glens Falls reaffirmed control by tallying five runs in the fifth against sophomore reliever Gracie Ruzzo — including home runs from Capozucca and Mosher.

As the conditions got even colder in the later innings, players wore warm-up jackets or sweatshirts over their uniform tops.

As the Bulldogs hit, Shaw slipped on a jacket and put on gloves as she stood watching, with her arms folded.

"I find different ways to deal with it. I'm sure all the other girls have different things they do too," Shaw said. "Not the best of conditions to play in."

After the game ended and the teams shook hands, Holtz gathered his players in right field to discuss some things as the veteran coach was not pleased with the way his team executed in certain situations.

"They are always competitors in the sectionals," Shaw said of the Spartans, "It is nice to see how far we've come."
