Corridor Veg Week, an homage to all things vegan, returns this Friday and runs through April 29, bringing with it special menus and events at restaurants around the Corridor.
A sort of plant-based version of Restaurant Week, Corridor Veg Week was first organized by local woman Thais Carnall in 2016 as a way to highlight how tasty vegan meals can be, introduce people to the concept of dining without meat, dairy, eggs or other animal-based products and showcase restaurants working to offer vegan options.
Participating restaurants will serve special menu items throughout the week, and many also will donate a portion of sales to Iowa Farm Sanctuary, a Marengo-based nonprofit that rescues and cares for farm animals.
Participating restaurants include: Big Grove Brewery & Taproom, Dumpling Darling, Oasis Falafel and Trumpet Blossom Cafe in Iowa City; Cappy’s Pizzeria, Caucho, The Full Bowl, Greyhound Deli & Cafe, Lightworks Cafe, Lion Bridge Brewing Company, Rawlicious, and The Quarter Barrel Arcade & Brewery in Cedar Rapids; That One Cupcake Place and Karma Coffee Cafe in Hiawatha; and Reds Alehouse in North Liberty. Full menus for each restaurant can be found at corridorvegweek.com.
Events throughout the week start with a kickoff meal at Lion Bridge Brewing Company, 59 16th Ave. SW, Cedar Rapids, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Friday. $25 tickets include one vegan entree, one drink, tax and gratuity and a donation to Iowa Farm Sanctuary, which will have representatives on hand to talk about their mission. Tickets are available at facebook.com/pg/corridorvegweek/events.
The Facebook page also includes tickets and details for a vegan pizza cooking demonstration at Thrive Gym, 2205 East Grantview Dr., Coralville, 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, $21.83; vegan tours of New Pioneer Co-op stores, 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Monday at 3338 Center Point Road NE, Cedar Rapids and 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at 1101 Second St., Coralville, free; and an Old Capitol Food Company Tofu Tour, 3569 Dolphin Dr. SE, Iowa City, 11 a.m. to noon April 29, free.
