Stay safe, Eastern Iowa, as a late-season winter storm could make commutes difficult throughout the Cedar Rapids and Iowa City area.

A winter storm warning remains in effect until 7 p.m., with a wintry mix of freezing rain and sleet starting in the morning and snow continuing throughout the day. Some areas could see thunderstorms and hail this morning. The National Weather Service predicts snow may become heavy at times, with snowfall rates of one to two inches per hour possible this afternoon. In total, three to six inches of snow are expected for Linn, Buchanan, Delaware and Benton counties, and gusting winds could sharply decrease visibility at times.

Meanwhile, Johnson and Iowa counties are expecting one to three inches of snow and remain under a winter weather advisory until 7 p.m.

The Gazette will update this post throughout the day as conditions warrant.

And things could always be worse: Check out our archive photos from 1973, when an April blizzard dumped more than 15 inches of snow on most of Iowa.

More springlike weather is expected this weekend, with highs forecast in the 50s for Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
