BJP States to hold rollout of SC order

Party will be filing review petitions

BJP-ruled States of Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Chattisgarh will be keeping in abeyance the implementation of the Supreme Court order on the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989 and will file review petitions against the order.

The move comes after the Central government too moved a review petition on April 2. Sources in the BJP confirmed that the party top brass has nudged the various State governments to do so. “We have spoken to these Chief Ministers and their governments will soon file a review petition in the court. It is natural that the implementation of the order will be put in abeyance till the judiciary takes a final call,” said a top source in the party.

The SC order had sparked protests across the country as it was seen as diluting the provisions of the Act, even as the Court said it acted to prevent the misuse of it.

Opposition parties too have used the issue to attack the ruling BJP.
