Whitney Zaloski hadn’t had a hit in her previous six plate appearances Tuesday night.
But with City View’s game creeping over five hours and the winning run standing on third base, the freshman figured it was now or never.
“I knew something had to be done. Either I had to ground it to get that runner in or anything,” Zaloski said. “I ended up hitting it all the way out there.”
Zaloski’s drove Kendall Candioto’s 239th pitch into the outfield for the game-winning hit as the Lady Mustangs outlasted the Lady Panthers 3-2 in 14 innings.
The win puts City View in a three-way tie for second place in 8-3A at 8-5 with Paradise and Boyd. Henrietta is now leading at 9-4 and Bowie is still alive at 7-6 heading into Friday’s finales.
There was no scoring after City View tied the game with two runs in the bottom of the seventh. Maddie Chalenburg struck out 24 batters and didn’t allow a run after Paradise scored twice off a fifth-inning error.
Chalenburg threw 241 pitches and allowed only eight hits and three walks. The sophomore also reached base four times, twice on walks and twice on hits.
She scored City View’s first run on Kori Hurd’s two-out triple and then Mackenzie Cave tied the game on an RBI single to force extra innings. Candioto and Chalenburg traded zeroes on the scoreboard until the 14th.
“We played a 12-inning game earlier in the season against Bowie and I guess that prepared us for this,” City View coach Charlie Stone said. “This was the longest game I’ve ever been a part of.
“That was awesome. The girls fought and fought. It’s a testament to them – they’ve been doing it all year.”
Lady Lions run-rule Burkburnett
BURKBURNETT – The Vernon Lady Lions kept their chances for a share of the District 6-4A title alive Tuesday with a 12-0 run-rule victory over Burkburnett in five innings.
Vernon will host Graham at 6 p.m. Friday with the district title on the line. Graham won the first meeting, 10-5, two weeks ago.
The Lady Lions jumped on Burk early with junior catcher Lauren Hager blasting a two-run homer over the center field fence.
Hager finished 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs, while Audrey Graf was 1-for-3 with a run and two RBIs. Jade Guzman got the win in the circle, giving up four hits with no walks and seven strikeouts.
Taylor Tournay had two of Burkburnett's four hits.
Rider wins while WFHS falls
After losing by 10 runs the night before, the Rider softball team bounced back for an 11-7 victory Tuesday night against Denton Braswell.
Rider’s playoff chances are still bleak at 4-7 heading into a finale Friday against unbeaten 5-5A champion Denton Ryan. Wichita Falls High School’s chances are equally dim after suffering a 3-2 setback at Sherman on Tuesday.
At 5-7, WFHS still has a chance of getting in a three-way tie for the last spot if Rider pulls off the upset and Braswell loses. But the Lady Coyotes were swept by Braswell and wouldn’t advance in a head-to-head tiebreaker.
