A Worthington man called police to report that he was extorted after attempting to pay for a prostitute last month.
The 20-year-old Worthington man told the Worthington Division of Police he "tried to make a transaction" in March with a prostitute in Columbus but "decided not to move forward" and never met with anyone.
A few days later, the man said, he was contacted by a person who told him he owed $350 for "the time he wasted" deciding on the transaction. The caller allegedly told the man that if he did not pay, harm would come to him and his family.
The man said he sent $350 to an account based in the Dominican Republic.
He said he included personal details in the process.
He called police March 30 and said he was "concerned for his family and his safety" and was worried the caller had "gang ties."
Because the original incident occurred in Columbus, Worthington officers have referred the man to the Columbus Division of Police and closed their investigation.
