Complain against Centre for not fulfilling promises made to State

A delegation of YSR Congress Party MPs on Tuesday met President Ram Nath Kovind as part of its ongoing protest demanding Special Category Status (SCS) for Andhra Pradesh.

The MPs also presented a memorandum to the President on the issue. “In parliamentary democracy such as ours, if an assurance given on the Floor of the House to a State as a precondition to bifurcate is not honoured, people will lose confidence in the overall democratic process,” the letter signed by YSR Congress Party president Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy said.

Party’s MPs had staged a six-day-long fast, which failed to evoke any political support.

“We told the President that the government neither kept the promises it made to the State nor allowed a debate on the no-confidence motion moved by us,” said YSR Congress MP Y.V. Subba Reddy. The President, according to Mr. Reddy, has assured to intervene as per the constitutional provisions.

The YSR Congress finds itself isolated among the opposition parties. It sided with the government for both the President’s and Vice President’s elections.

“We don’t need support from any other political party when we have support of our people,” Mr. Reddy added.
