Stalin demands resignation of Governor; protests to continue

DMK working president M.K. Stalin on Wednesday said Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit should resign from the post or the Centre should recall him to Delhi, saying that his activities had proved that he was not fit to be in the position.

“He (Governor) forgets the fact that there is an elected government in Tamil Nadu and functions as if the state is under President’s rule. He issues orders and seeks to implement them. Already the state is witnessing protest against his continuation in the post,” Mr Stalin told reporters after meeting DMK cadre who were arrested when they tried to reach Raj Bhavan under the leadership of former Chennai Mayor Ma. Subramaniam.

“We will continue our protests till the Governor resigns from his post or the Centre removes him,” he added.

Mr Stalin said that the Governor had shamed the State by patting on the cheek of a woman journalist instead of answering her question at Tuesday’s press conference. “I have already tweeted about my stand on the issue. It is an uncivilised act,” he said.

Asked about the Governor’s assertion that the State government could not intervene in his rights to appoint an inquiry commission to probe the allegations of a suspended woman assistant professor luring girl students, he said, “It was for Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami to respond. As a political party constantly voicing its opinion in support of state autonomy, the DMK also condemns the Governor’s act.”
