I’d copy Sridevi’s dance steps, says Karishma Kapoor

Actress Karisma Kapoor was in Chennai last week to launch the New York accessory brand Coach’s new store in Palladium, Velachery. MetroPlus caught up with her for a quick chat on movies, fashion and more.

The Chennai connection

I’ve come to the city after two years. In the early days of my career, I would come here very often for shoots and have spent a lot of time here. I’d say I have a special bond with South India. I’m quite fond of the South Indian thali too; I love avial. As a foodie, it is a pleasure to be back here.

On Tamil movies

I haven’t gotten a chance to watch any of the recent Tamil movies. But I think there is good cinema being made here — so many Hindi movies are adapted from Tamil ones. I myself have done Tamil remakes. I remember back then, I’d watch the Tamil version of the movie and pick up bits and pieces of the language slowly.

Favourite Sridevi memory

I am a huge fan of all of her earlier movies that were remade in Hindi, like Himmatwala and Justice Chaudhury. I would watch her on screen and copy her dance steps. Sridevi’s dance in ‘Naino Me Sapna’ is my favourite.

On her go-to fashion statement

I dress for myself and not from the pressure of going to an event. I dress in what I will be comfortable in. I think that’s why people like my fashion sense — I never fall for the outfit or the designer of the moment. And, I don’t follow trends.

Hiatus from films

I have chosen not to work in movies right now. My kids are still young and I can’t bear to be away from them for 100-plus days for a film shoot.
