COMBES — A heavy brush fire in the median of North Expressway 77 created low visibility causing vehicles to slow down, and led to a multiple car pileup.
Six adults and two children were rescued from the crash and sent to a nearby hospital.
Police said after the initial crash a tractor-trailer approached the smoke and caused a second crash into first car pileup.
“There was a lot of smoke,” said Patrick Quill, Combes Police chief.
The crash occurred late Sunday near FM 508. It delayed northbound traffic for two hours until the scene was cleared around 7:30 p.m.
According to police, several cars behind the tractor-trailer followed, causing an eight-vehicle collision, including the tractor-trailer.
Police said many of the victims were treated and released from the hospital later that day.
However, one adult and an infant were still in critical condition as of Sunday night. No further information on their condition was available.
Multiple police departments assisted Combes police until the scene was cleared.
No charges have been filed.
