A former magistrates court – once tipped for a Wetherspoon pub – could now be transformed into an apartment hotel.

The courtrooms in Holyhead were closed by the Ministry of Justice at the end of 2016 and the “important building” was placed up for sale.

National pub chain JD Wetherspoon had previously said it was aware of the building’s availability and did want to come to somewhere in the port town.

But now the site has been bought up with plans submitted for a serviced ‘aparthotel’ and a retail unit on the ground floor.

The application is from Holyhead Lions Gate Ltd.

It would see the site turned into 10 serviced holiday apartment rooms - providing a boost for tourism in the centre of the town.

A planning statement from agents Owen Devenport stated: “The proposal makes use of an important building which, though not statutorily protected is an important building within the streetscape and the Holyhead Central Conservation Area, to provide a suitable development for the site and locality.

“Indeed, this is a substantial building which is under utilised, and will deteriorate if not brought into productive use.

“The proposal would make use of the building within a high quality development and include for a commercial/retail use on the ground floor.

“The proposal would have a beneficial impact through direct economic benefits from employment, as well as indirect benefits through spending by visitors in other local businesses.”

The application will now be considered by planners at Anglesey council .
