Union Minister for Science and Technology Harsh Vardhan on Monday asked students of Jamia Millia Islamia to come up with “out-of-the-box” ideas to help with nation building and “draw inspiration from world leaders that India has produced since time immemorial”.

Power of truth

He told them to embrace the power of honesty, truth, karma, love, compassion and God as they embark on their journey after having studied at the prestigious institution. Dr. Harsh Vardhan was addressing students at the annual convocation of Jamia Millia Islamia.

4,694 students awarded

Vice-Chancellor of the university, Talat Ahmed said that 4,694 were awarded degrees and diplomas at the convocation that included 322 PhDs.

Chancellor of the university Najma A. Heptulla also addressed the gathering and reminded the students of the role that the founders of the university played in the freedom struggle and asked them to take forward the vision of the founders. She said, “For 98 years, Jamia has provided humane service to the country and the world and I am happy to see that this is being carried forward, with the university contributing to campaigns like Digital India and Skill India.”

She added that the alumni of the university, particularly from the social sciences and mass communication programmes, have contributed to highlight various social evils and urged the current batch of students to continue in the footsteps of their alumni and be good ambassadors of the nation.

The university added nine more courses in certain areas.
