In a unique initiative, an ambulance service has been launched for stray dogs in the twin city of Bhubaneswar and Cuttack.

Bhubaneswar Mayor Ananta Narayan Jena inaugurated the ‘Dog Ambulance’, a service launched by city-based fashion designer Sweta Parekh, at a programme held at Bomikhal on Sunday.

Not only stray dogs but other animals too can be provided the ambulance service to the veterinary hospitals, said Parekh.

The ailing street dogs or any animal would be taken to the OUAT or any other veterinary hospital in the ambulance for treatment, she said.

The ambulance service is priced at Rs 500 for pet dogs in Bhubaneswar and Rs 800 in Cuttack.

Parekh said that the idea of the ambulance service struck her mind after she faced difficulties during delivery of her pet dog to take her to a hospital. The ambulance service would also help the animals including street dogs to take them to hospital if they meet with accident on the road, she said.

She urged people to observe April 15 as ‘Roti Day’ every year to distribute food among the street dogs.
