With so many specs to consider and new versions of smartphones annually invading the marketplace, differentiation is key. Distinctions are often evident in camera quality and function.

Claims for the Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9+, launched in February and available now, are that its camera is “brilliant in the dark.” The company hypes apertures — even though the digital camera age has left many post-baby boomers ignorant of the single-lens reflex camera term. The phones’ camera, with a wide aperture of 1.5, “finds light even in the dark, so the low light camera delivers vibrant photos late into the night,” asserts Samsung. In essence, the camera technology “adapts like a human eye” to switch from varying light conditions with ease.

Androidcentral.com offered this camera detail in its “Everything you Need to Know” report on the phines: “The S9 and S9+ have adjustable apertures, switching seamlessly between f/1.5 and f/2.4.”

Techradar.com calls the camera “a leap forward” and gives it a plus sign in its review for the smartphone’s low-light capabilities.

Besides kudos for its camera, the Galaxy S9 offers these “intelligent alterations and upgrades” above last year’s 8 model, shares Forbes:
— 20 percent greater drop protection and thicker glass
— Repositioned fingerprint reader
— Amplified earpiece
— Top and bottom bezels that are “fractionally thinner,” resulting in a higher screen-to-body ratio
— A display that has “20 percent increase in brightness, class-leading color accuracy, and the lowest mobile screen reflectance ever recorded”

Battery life remains the same at 3000 mAh, but Forbes noted this quality battery has lasting power.

Cost for the S9 is $719.99 and for the S9+ is $839.99. A current offer with Verizon includes buy one S9 or S9+ and get a Galaxy S9 free. T-Mobile is offering 50 percent off an S9 or S9+ with a qualifiying trade-in. More details re at samsung.com/us.
