Notorious gangster Nick Chan walks free from Calgary court after murder charge stayed

Notorious Calgary gang leader Nick (Nicholas) Chan is a free man.

He was scheduled to stand trial in front of a jury this week. Instead, Justice Paul Jeffrey stayed three charges, including one count of first-degree murder.

The Queen’s Bench justice stated Chan was not tried within a reasonable amount of time.

The jury was briefly brought into court, thanked for their time and dismissed.

Chan was accused of the first-degree murder of Kevin Anaya and conspiring to murder Kevin Bontogon.

He was also charged with directing a criminal organization.

Chan has been released from custody.

In March 2016, Chan was acquitted of first-degree murder in connection with the Bolsa triple-murders.

The charges for both cases were the result of a massive police operation called “Desino” in which several immunity deals were made with gang members in exchange for testimony against their former fellow gang members.

A publication ban prevents media from reporting further details related to the case.
