In Mt. Pleasant, officially the latest winter school closing ever

It’s official.

Today’s school cancellation in Mt. Pleasant is the latest winter storm closing in district history.

High school teacher Wendy Epple, official keeper of records going back almost 60 years, shared that news on Facebook Tuesday morning.

“Since 1960, (Mt. Pleasant Public Schools) has never closed school this late in the year for ice/snow,” Epple said.

School was cancelled once on May 19 for dense fog and on June 4 for vandalism, she said.

Epple holds the district’s school closing record book started in 1960 by former teacher Hud Kennan, and passed down to retired teacher Ted McIntyre.

“Science teacher Hud Keenan started logging closure dates,” said Epple told the Morning Sun for a story last year.

“When he retired, the log was passed down to math teacher Ted McIntyre. When Ted retired, I inherited the doc.”

According to the data, there have only been seven years since 1960 that saw no weather cancellations, five of those in the 1960s and none since the 1991-92 school year.

The earliest closure date in a school year for on record was on Aug. 31 in 2001; the record-keeper noted students stayed home because of fog.

In 2013 school was canceled for weather as late as April 12 because of snow and ice.

That wasn’t the latest into an academic year for an unplanned day off, however; on June 4, 2007 school was canceled because of vandalism, one of several non-typical cancellations.
