A fire at a southeast Edmonton retirement facility Monday night that sent a senior to hospital was caused by smoking, say fire investigators.

Firefighters were called to Churchill Manor on 58th Street and 34th Avenue at 10:35 p.m.

The fire started in a first-floor unit and was contained to one suite.

An elderly man was found unconscious in the suite and was taken to hospital, said Maya Filipovic with Edmonton Fire Rescue. The extent of his injuries were unknown as of Tuesday afternoon.

All residents of the 114-room facility were evacuated until the smoke was cleared from the building.

Investigators determined the fire was caused by smoker's materials, Edmonton Fire and Rescue said Tuesday.

Property damage is estimated at $150,000 while damage to contents is listed as $50,000.
