University of Delaware senior Ashley Bailey, a Middletown High grad, cleared 13 feet, 2¼ inches to win the pole vault and break her own school record and also won the long jump at the Towson Invitational Saturday.

Bailey’s pole vault put her in the top 50 nationally. Her 18-8½ long jump was an ECAC qualifying mark and the fourth best in UD history.

Junior Alexis Lipnicky had a career-best discus throw of 143-1, third best ever by a Blue Hen, to win that event and qualify for ECACs.

Junior Carly Pettipaw won the 800 with a career-best 2:09.75, No. 3 in school history, and senior Madeline Berman won the 5,000 in 18:57.46, also a career best.

Freshman Marissa McFolling-Young out of Smyrna High was second in the discus (144-10”) and third in the shot put (43-3) for Delaware.

Kitchen cooks up CAA reward

Delaware sophomore attackman Charlie Kitchen was named Colonial Athletic Association co-player of the week in men’s lacrosse.

Kitchen had a career-high five goals, including the game-winner with 6:08 left, in Delaware’s 10-9 win at Hofstra, the Blue Hens’ first over the Pride since 2011.

The Blue Hens (5-6, 2-1) visit Towson (4-7, 1-2) at noon Saturday.

CAA cites Sullivan, Mohollen 

Freshman Billy Sullivan earned his second Colonial Athletic Association pitcher of the week award this season after striking out a career-high 16 batters in seven shutout innings of Saturday’s 5-1 win over UNC-Wilmington at Hannah Stadium.

The 2017 St. Mark’s High graduate allowed three hits, including two infield singles. He is now 4-1 with a 1.99 ERA.

Junior center-fielder Kevin Mohollen was named CAA player of the week after hitting .583 (7-for-12) with three doubles and six runs scored. The leadoff man reached base 14 times in four games.

Delaware plays Lafayette at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Liberty Bell Classic title game at Citizens Bank Park.

UD women golfers, Klotz second at CAAs

The University of Delaware placed second as a team and sophomore Ariane Klotz tied for second Sunday in the Colonial Athletic Association Women’s Golf Championships in Southport, North Carolina.

The College of Charleston had a three-round score of 910 to edge the two-time defending champion Blue Hens by 10 strokes.

Klotz shot an eight-over-par 74-75-75--224 on the par-72, 6,066-yard Reserve Club course at St. James Plantation, as she and Charleston’s Victoria Huskey were one shot behind UNCW’s repeat champion Lyberty Anderson.

Thitaree Sakulbunpanich finished in ninth with a 14-over 74-78-78--230 and Ashley Dingman was 17-over at 77-79-77--233 to finish 13th for Delaware.

Dual honors for Goldey's Jump

Goldey-Beacom freshman Trevor Jump was named Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference baseball rookie of the week for the second straight week and also chosen as CACC pitcher of the week Monday.

The Mount Pleasant High grad was 2-0 with a 1.38 ERA, struck out 18, allowed five hits and walked five over 13 innings against Concordia and Post. He has won four straight starts, striking out 30 and allowing three runs over 28 innings.

Synchronized swimmer wins title

Wilmington native Megumi Field and partner Abigail Kartzinel won the gold medal in the USA Synchronized Swimming national championships in the 13- to 15-year-old division Saturday in Lewisville, Texas.

Field, who is actually 12, was also second in the 13-15 figures competition, second in junior combo and placed third in the team routine in the 13-15 age division.

Field moved to Cerritos, California, in 2016 to train under high-level coaches at the club La Mirada Aquabelles.

She first tried the sport at age five with the Philadelphia Freedom Valley YMCA Synchro club coached by Jennifer Hatt and has won Junior Olympic, national and Pan American championships.

G League honors Delaware's Wood

Christian Wood, who averaged 23 points and 10 rebounds per game last season for the Delaware 87ers (now Blue Coats), has been named to the All-NBA G League second team. 

The 6-foot-11 forward out of UNLV was fourth in the league in both categories. His season was highlighted by a 46-point, 19-rebound effort against Long Island on March 11.
