SURAT: Police have again started issuing
e-challans to traffic violators in the city from Sunday. If anyone is caught talking on phone while driving, he or she can be fined up to Rs2,000.
City police had stopped issuing e-challans and collecting fine from traffic violators six months ago. The home department carried out some improvements in the technology and restarted issuing of e-challans in the four major cities of the state.
At least 604 cameras have been fitted in different parts of the city. Majority of the cameras are used for traffic regulation and to identify traffic violators. Police department has deployed a team at the command and control centre. This team would identify traffic violator and send an e-memo to him or her at the registered address asking for payment of the fine. Traffic violators would also get SMS on their registered mobile numbers too.
People would be able to pay the fine at the branches of ICICI, Varachha
Co-operative Bank Ltd., HDFC Bank,
Sutex Bank and Axis Bank. They can also pay the fine at the police commissionerate.
First time offenders who don’t stop at the line, park at no parking zone and have fancy number plates on their vehicles would have to pay fine of Rs100. Second time violation would invite a fine of Rs300. Similarly, over speeding would invite fine of Rs400, and Rs1,000 when it is done for second time. The maximum fine is for talking on phone while driving. A person would have to pay a fine of Rs1,000 if caught talking on mobile phone for first time and Rs2,000 from second time onwards.
