Thiruvananthapuram: The city police have ruled out political reasons behind the assault on BJP councillor Pappanamcode Saji. Saji, who is the councillor of Melamcode, sustained multiple injuries after he was attacked by a group of armed assailants on Friday.
He was hacked using sharp weapons and beaten with blunt iron rods. He suffered serious injuries on the back of his head. BJP Karamana area secretary Prakash, who was with him, has also suffered minor injuries in the attack. City police commissioner P Prakash said that the police have identified key persons behind the attack on the councillor. “We understand that it was not a politically instigated attack. The reason was purely personal. More details can be divulged only after detailed probe,” said P Prakash. A few persons involved in the assault are learnt to be in police custody. The attack occurred at Thekkekotta.

BJP state president Kummanam Rajasekharan had earlier alleged that CPM was behind the attack. Saji is also the district general secretary of Bharatiya Janata Party. The assault had triggered allegations of political nature since the city had witnessed political tension recently between CPM and BJP. tnn
