ROURKELA: With an aim to bring transgenders into the mainstream, Rourkela Municipal Corporation (RMC) and Social Security and Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (SSEPD) Department organised ‘Sweekruti Samavesh’ on e-library premises here on Sunday.

On the occasion, District Social Security Officer Ashok Bisi informed the gathering about Government initiatives to cover members of the third gender under social security net and skill development programmes. The Government has launched several schemes to empower transgenders and ensure decent earning options to help them lead a normal life in society, he said.

The representative of SBI-RSETI (Rural Self Employment Training Institute) P Ekka highlighted the available skill development opportunities for transgenders.

As many as 40 transgenders attended the event.  Transgenders Sanudni, Payal and Joya shared their life experiences with the audience. Later, members of the transgender community also presented a cultural show.

Rourkela ADM Monisha Banerjee graced the occasion as the chief guest. Leader of Transgender Persons’ Association Radhir Lenka also spoke.
