2018-04-16 11:58

Cape Town - The South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC) will pay out nearly R1.5 million to the medal winners - and their coaches - at the recent concluded Commonwealth Games on Australia's Gold Coast.

Prior to the spectacle, SASCOC promised the Team SA squad monetary incentives, with gold, silver and bronze medal winners pocketing R55 000, R25 000 and R15 000, respectively.

Coaches of those athletes or teams would in turn receive R12 500, R7 500 and R5 000, respectively.

When proceedings wrapped up on Sunday, Team SA finished sixth in the medal table, with 13 golds, 11 silvers and 13 bronze medals.

That amounts to a grand total of R1 495 000 from SASCOC's coffers.

Swimming star Chad le Clos was the 'big winner', with his three gold medals (50m/100m/200m butterfly) and silver in the 100m freestyle and bronze in the 4x100m medley relay netting him R193 750 - assuming the relay bronze is divided equally amount the four participants.
