A motorist drove into a concrete barrier at the Midpoint Bridge toll plaza early Sunday, injuring himself and a passenger, Cape Coral police report.

Officers reported Clay Dilbeck, 37, of Cape Coral, was driving a 2003 Ford Explorer  about 5 a.m., when he hit the center barrier, deploying the vehicle's air bags and extensively damaging the vehicle.

An officer helped Dilbeck from the SUV. A second officer noted Dilbeck's face was covered in blood, and he had multiple small cuts on his head.

The report said Dilbeck was slurring his words and had a strong odor of alcohol.

Dilbeck refused sobriety tests, the report indicates, and officials took him to Lee Memorial Hospital for treatment.

According to the probable cause statement, Dilbeck said he had left downtown Fort Myers and was headed west on the bridge. After passing the toll plaza, Dilbeck told police his passenger told him to turn left; and he did so immediately, crashing into the barrier.

Lee Memorial reported Dilbeck's blood-alcohol level was 0.197 percent, the statement indicates. Drunken driving in Florida is 0.08 percent.

He was released from Lee County Jail on Sunday on a $1,000 bond. His next court date is set for April 30.

The toll plaza remained open.
