LED bulbs to be sold to 38,000 families

LED bulbs will be sold for ₹50 each to nearly 38,000 families in 74 village panchayats as part of the ‘Gram Swaraj Abhiyan’, a village self-governance campaign that is under way in Vellore district.

According to a press release, Collector S.A. Raman flagged off vehicles that will sell the LED bulbs. The Department of Rural Development, Government of Tamil Nadu and Union Ministry of Power are jointly implementing “Ujala” (Unnat Jyoti by Affordable LED for All) scheme in the district.

Under this scheme, the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (TANGEDCO) and Energy Efficiency Services Limited under the Union Ministry of Power will provide 9 watt LED bulbs. By using the energy efficient LED bulbs, wastage of power could be prevented to a large extent, Mr. Raman said.

Officers of TANGEDCO and Rural Development Department should create awareness on the benefits of using the LED bulbs and conserving energy. It is expected that 76,000 of the bulbs will come into use in the district instead of the 60 watt bulbs under this scheme. Through this, 0.698 million unit of electricity can be saved for a year, Mr. Raman said in the release.

T. Sengottaiyan, district revenue officer and Rajendran, superintending engineering of Tangedco, Vellore division were present.
