Bhopal: SC played important role of sentinel of freedom by abolishing draconian laws says justice Ranjan Gogoi


Bhopal: “Supreme Court played an important role of sentinel of freedom by doing away with draconian legislation and intrusive rules,” said justice Ranjan Gogoi on Sunday. He was speaking on ‘Constitutional Precepts:  Yesterday and Today in the Eyes of Tomorrow’ at justice GP Singh III Memorial Lecture organised by National Law Institute University (NLIU), Bhopal.

Citing cases of Shreya Singhal, Putthuswami and Ghosh he explained how the Supreme Court had prevented legislators from curbing the freedom. He also paid rich tributes to justice HR Khanna, justice JS Verma, justice GP Singh and justice AP Sen and said they were the people with impeccable integrity and courage who left no stone unturned to hold firmly the fundamental principles of equality, freedom and justice mentioned in the Constitution.

Talking about Dr Ambedkar he said that true spirit of the Constitution can only be fulfilled when mend work on it would be good and towards this Ambedkar had his faith firmly placed on the shoulder of today’s youth for a better tomorrow. The programme was attended by chief justice of high court of Madhya Pradesh justice Hemant Gupta, chief justice of high court of Guwahati, justice Ajit Singh, justice SR Maheshwari and justice Satish Sharma from high court of MP and others.
