‘Transgenders have made progress in various fields’

Commemorating the landmark 2014 judgement by the Supreme Court recognising transgender community as the third gender, an event was organised here on Sunday by Priya Babu, writer and member of the community.

The judgement delivered by the Supreme Court on April 15, 2014 recognised the community in a bid to safeguard their rights under the Constitution.

Speaking at the event, Ms. Priya Babu said even though transgenders were scorned by many, they had made significant progress in various fields.

Film directors P. Samuthirakani and Seenu Ramasamy participated in the event. A short film, ‘Mr. Nangai’, revealing the hardships faced by transgenders, was screened on the occasion.

Mr. Samuthirakani said people had to be sensitised to the problems faced by transgenders and hoped acceptance of transgenders would be achieved soon. Seenu Ramasamy congratulated the young team of filmmakers for effectively portraying the hardships faced by the community.

Tirunelveli District Court Sub-Judge A.K.K. Rajini said the community was achieving new strides, and legal aid services would always be extended to address their grievances. Noted writer Indira Soundararajan also offered felicitation.
